MCLGA Championship Qualifying

What a day we had a Kingsknowe. The sun shone all day long and it just got warmer and warmer - just look at that blue sky - it's April! Some of the golf was pretty hot as well. First out, Rachael Watton posted a 1 under par 71, which was then matched by Karen Marshall, Kate McIntosh and Kate Rorke. Louise Fraser, disappointed by her 81 in the morning, showed her grit and determination by bouncing back with a 71 in the afternoon after both Karen and Rachael shot 70.

Rachel wins the Robertson Salver for the best scratch score on the better inward half from Karen Marshall. Unfortunately Rachael is unable to take part in the match play stages as she flies off to Cardiff tomorrow for the Welsh Open Stroke play Championship (Good luck to Rachael, and to Jane Turner and Gabrielle Macdonald all playing in the Welsh).

CSS 71 for both rounds.

The 16 qualifiers for the match play stages on Saturday and Sunday are:
Karen Marshall (Baberton) (141)
Kate McIntosh (Broomieknowe) (144)
Wendy Nicholson (Broomieknowe) (146)
Kate Rorke (Kingsknowe) (148)
Claire Hargan (Strathmore) (149)

Juniors North Berwick Outing 2011

Fifteen girls headed off to North Berwick today to play on the 9 hole course. It was dry if a wee bit chilly, but as usual there were lots of smiles and laughs (and that was just the President and Captain!). There was lots of good golf as well - the passers by and Anthony in the "hut" were very impressed! Then off we went to North Berwick clubhouse for some sausage rolls, pizza, chicken nuggets etc. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. Thanks to all the parents and others who helped out, especially President Janet and Mr President (Sandy - The President's chauffeur and man of extreme patience).

Results:

1st handicap - Emma Watson 39 (18) 21
2nd handicap - Julia Smith 35 (13.5) 21.5

MCLGA Spring Meeting

Most of today at Turnhouse was more like summer than spring, with the morning players sitting outside having drinks and lunch after their game. With the frequent sound of planes overhead, everyone felt they were on their hols! Those playing later in the day had to contend with a bit more chill when the mist descended (real mist that is) and the wind got up a little. But a great day was had by all despite a few tales of lost balls and missed putts.

Thank you to Turnhouse members and staff for all their help, especially to the ladies who helped on the desk, the Pro shop and the bar and catering staff for looking after us so well. Thanks also to those who donated raffle prizes and bought tickets - we raised £138.50 for the juniors.

The best scratch score was posted by Noreen Fenton early in the day and matched by Linda Bain at the end of the day. Noreen wins the Cormack Salver on the better inward half. A fantastic score of 91 (23) 68 was then posted by Margaret Clark who wins the CM Park Rosebowl for the best bronze scratch score.

It was a busy day on Sunday. While the Cuthbertson Cup team were battling it out at Tulliallan, 12 juniors were playing in the monthly 9 hole competition on Swanston's Templar course. 2nd handicap - Eilidh Crawford 36 (11) 25
3rd handicap Emma Watson 45 (18) 27

Midlothian Girls put up Strong Cuthbertson Cup Defence

Our girls did Midlothian proud yesterday in their attempt to retain the Cuthbertson Cup for a record equalling sixth year in a row. In the morning Midlothian were up against Stirling and Clackmannanshire. Captain Gabrielle Macdonald got the team off to a flying start with a 4&3 win over Alison Goodwin and Hannah Scott beat Tiffiny Wood 6&4. Meanwhile Kate McIntosh was having a battle with Alexis Hutton who was holing putts and chips from everywhere. All eyes turned to newcomer Jessica Dalgetty in her first Cuthbertson Cup game and first real experience of playing at this level. We didn't need to worry. She seemed to grow in confidence with every shot, and with sister Emily playing every one of them with her from the sidelines, she recorded a resounding 7&6 victory over Jennifer Allan. Hearing all this news from the other matches, Kate, not to be outdone, fought back from 3 down to eventually square her match on the 18th.

The afternoon was always going to be tough. East Lothian, having beaten Fife in the morning, had a very strong team. Once again Gabrielle led from the front, dispensing with Lesley Atkins 4&3. The others were really up against it and despite some sterling efforts and fight backs, Kate and Hannah eventually lost to Clara Young and Keren Ward. All eyes turned once again to young Jessica. Having been four down to Rosie Everett, news of a come back came in, 3 down, 2 down, 1 down .. could she do it? She held her nerve, but Rosie was just too strong and a great approach shot to the 17th finished it off.

An exhausted and disappointed team left a very sunny Tulliallan still smiling, and gracious in defeat. We are proud of how you all played and conducted yourselves girls. Congratulations to our neighbours East Lothian, you deserved it this year, but we will be fighting hard to get that trophy back next year!

Many thanks to everyone who supported the girls on the day and especially to Caroline McIntosh, Sandra Hennessy, Karen Marshall, Agnes Lesley and Janet Wake for all their help.

Results:

Midlothian v Stirling & Clackmannanshire
Gabrielle Macdonald beat Alison Goodwin 4&3
Kate McIntosh halved with Alexis Hutton
Hannah Scott beat Tiffiny Wood 6&4
Jessica Dalgetty beat Jennifer Allan 7&6
Midlothian
v East Lothian

Gabrielle Macdonald beat Lesley Atkins 4&3
Kate McIntosh lost to Clara Young 3&2
Hannah Scott lost to Karen Ward 2&1
Jessica Dalgetty lost to Rosie Everett 2&1

Junior Spring Meeting

A fun filled day was had by all at the Junior Spring meeting held at Liberton Golf Club today. Eight girls took part in the handiacp competition, and 7 in the 8 hole, non-handicap competition which was followed by a 6 hole putting competition. It was a bit of a dull morning compared with the tropical condition of the weekend, as as the non-handcap competitors teed off the rain started to lash down and the wind howled, and the Captain and president (who had not bothered with brollies or waterproofs) started to have very bad hair days! But the girls kept smiling and off they went!
Results:
1st scratch: Kate McIntosh (Broomieknowe) 74 2nd scratch: Isobel Hinds (Liberton) 89
1st handicap: Eilidh Crawford (Harburn) 88 (24) 64 2nd handicap: Heather Laing (Glencorse) 92 (19) 73
1st non-handicap: Caitlin Turner 49 2nd equal non handicap: Emmy Pearson 71 2nd equal non handicap: Lisa MacPherson 71
1st putting: Lucy Morrison 2nd putting: Lisa MacPherson Apologies to Caitlin who missed the photos! More can be seen below.

Midlothian v Lanarkshire

On a day that resembled summer rather than spring, we set off to Hayston Golf Club in Kirkintilloch for our annual match against Lanarkshire Ladies. We did get there eventually with a few detours and wrong golf courses (even the Sat Navs got confused and they certainly could not pronounce Kirkintilloch!) only to discover the club had one of our own Midlothian members as past champion. For Alexander read Fenton and if you can read the year .......! (must have been champion at age 3!

Some great golf was played on a glorious day with Midlothian winning 2.5 to 1.5 and the junior match halved.

Results:

Racael Watton & Claire Hargan lost to Pamela Pretswell & Gillian Scanlon 4&3

Wendy Nicholson & Karen Marshall beat Susan Wood & Emma Caddon 2&1

Kate McIntosh & Louise Fraser beat Angela dDvine & May Hughes 3&1

Fiona de Vries & Hilary Laughland halved with Lesley Lloyd & Jenny Porter

Juniors:

Heather Laing & Eilidh Crawford beat Heather Neilson & Alison Reid 2&1

Emma Morrison & Julia Smith lost to Emily Glencorse & Abbi Kidd 1 down

Jane Victorious at St Andrews

Midlothian player Jane Turner (Craigielaw) battled strong winds and a strong field to win the R&A Foundation Scholars Tournament at St Andrews yesterday. Jane had a 54 hole total of 240 to beat Pamela Pretswell and Kelsey McDonald by 2 strokes. This has given Jane a place on a Ladies European Tour event later in the year. Well done Jane!

Midlothian v Borders Ladies

At the second attempt, we finally made it to Cardrona for our annual match against Borders Ladies, the first one being cancelled due to the March snow. As we drove down to Peebles the weather seemed to get worse and worse. We got a text from Kirsten Blackwood telling us how bad the weather was at Cardrona (I'm sure she got there the night before) and we thought, here we go again.

There were a few concerned faces as we got our of our cars to be met with wind and rain. However, by the time our President arrived, complete with new hip, and we had our coffee/ hot chocolate (and bacon rolls for the Dalgetty girls), the weather was starting to improve. There were three matches played against the Borders and Midlothian won 2-1. In addition Sal Shepherd and Jessica Dalgetty took on Gabrielle Macdonald and Emily Dalgetty in a very serious match, and three of our juniors, Kirsty Simpson, Kirsty Burgess and Julia Smith played under the watchful Olivia Fulton who was an honorary junior for the day.

Some great golf was played in very windy conditions and we were more than ready for our soup and sandwiches after the 10 mile hikes from green to tee! Gabrielle endjoyed her snooze on the way home while the Captain was struggling to stay awake! Our thanks to Jenny Pearson and Borders ladies for ther excellent hospitality and for all their efforts in arranging and re-arranging the match.

Results:

Arlene McGarty & Gillian Simpson beat Liz Campbell & Laura Neish 4&2

Claire Hargan & Linda Bain beat Anne Dodds and Wendy Wells 4&2

Kirsten Blackwood & Linda Caine lost to Denise Richards & Venetia Scott 2 down.
