Scottish Universities Stroke-Play Tournament

Congratulations to Jane Turner (Craigielaw/ Robert Gordon's University), who one the Scottish University's Order of Merit stroke-play tournament at Dundonald Links, Ayrshire this week. Jane carded a three round total of 233, four stokes ahead of Kelsey MacDonald (Stirling) in second place. Well done Jane - great start to the season!

Junior Social Night

What a great start to the season. Twenty-six girls had a fun filled evening at Fountain Park Ten Pin last night. Not only was there some great (and some not so great) bowling, but also some interesting dancing (don't ask!). Some future captains were also on display as Jess and Emily Dalgetty, Kate McIntosh, Kirsty Burgess and Julia Smith led and encouraged their teams with great enthusiasm. Tactics were discussed and plans hatched.

There were a few anxious moments when we were waiting for the food to arrive, would it come, would we all remember what we ordered, will we starve to death before it arrives? A bit of dancing kept hunger pains at bay.

Captain and Junior Secretary went on the hunt, and eventually a collection of chicken dippers, burgers, fish fingers arrived. Eventually everyone got something (but not necessarily what they ordered!). Then it was back to the bowling, with Kirsty's team of Caitlin Turner, Emma Watson. Alex Massey and Jessica Thain, coming out on top with a fantastic score of 836.
Easter eggs were dispatched as prizes and everyone went home with at least a cream egg. The adults went off to lie down in a quiet darkened room! Thanks to all the girls who came along and to Sandra Hennesey, Sharon MacPherson and VC Caroline for all their help with the organisation. You can view more photos of the chaos below.

The results were as follows:

Handicap section
  1. Emma Watson 46 (18) 28
  2. Eilidh Crawford 42 (12) 30
  3. Emma Morrsion 44 (13) 31

Non-handicap section

  2. Allex Massey 47
  3. Megan Brown 49

Thanks to squad members Sal Shepherd and Claire Hargan and all the parents who helped and walked round with the girls, giving them valuable support and advice. Thanks also to Sandra Hennesey, Sharon MacPherson and Caroline McIntosh for organising the day.

In the afternoon our Junior Training Squad had an excellent putting session with Mark Berrie at the Braids Golf Centre. Our thanks go to Mark for his excellent coaching over the past few months and to Karen Marshall for all her organisation. I'm sure all this short game coaching will benefit the girls greatly this coming season.

Kate's in the Driving Seat!

What a week for Kate McIntosh (Broomieknowe). Yesterday she became Scottish Junior Champion of Champions, the previous Sunday having won the last event of the Scottish Golf Academy Under 16's winter series and finished 2nd in the over 16's order of merit and this morning she topped it all by passing her driving test! So just a warning - watch out on the golf course and on the roads this year everyone! Well done Kate!

Kate is Scottish Junior Champion of Champions

On a very wet and cold day at the Dukes course in St Andrews, Kate McIntosh (Broomieknowe) was crowned Scottish Junior Champion of Champions, winning the title on the better inward half from Midlothian team mate Rachael Watton (Mortonhall). Starting at the 10th hole after a one hour rain delay, Kate played her first 9 holes in level par and was still level when she reached the par 4 seventh (her 16th hole), where she ran up a triple bogey 7 and thought her chance of the title was gone. But Kate showed her resolve by paring the next hole and just narrowly missing a birdie putt on the last, to shoot a three over par 74. Rachael had one of those days when the putts didn't drop and a missed putt on her last hole (9th) cost her dearly.

However both Kate and Rachael's scores of 74 were fantastic on an extremely wet course, and in fact if preferred lies had not been in operation, would have been a course record.

Gabrielle Macdonald didn't have her best day, which wasn't surprising given that she has just returned from Australia and is still suffering from jet lag. This cold Scottish weather was a bit of a shock to the system and the waterproofs hadn't seen the light of day for a few months, so she just went looking for some Kangaroos in the trees! Welcome back Gabrielle! (nice tan!)

Well done girls - Midlothian is proud of you and we look forward to great things for the rest of the season.

Champions of Champions Draw 2011

The first MCLGA committee meeting for 2011 took place last night at Liberton Golf Club. The Champion of Champions draw was made and is available on the website by clicking on the left hand side of this page under DRAWS.

Following a survey of members, the committee made a decision that Distance Measuring Devices will be permitted in MCLGA competitions this year. The following rule applies to all MCLGA competitions:

"Players should note that electronic Distance Measuring Devices (DMDs) may be used in MCLGA competitions only if the relevant Local Rule has been adopted by the course in question by the club committee. Devices which measure functions in addition to distance (e.g altitude, temperature) are not permitted in any circumstances, even if these functions are switched off. The penalty for using such a device on the golf course is disqualification."

Please note that DMDs are NOT permitted in the 2010/2011 Winter Foursomes and should not be used for the remainder of the rounds.
