95th AGM of Midlothian Ladies Golf Association

Midlothian AGM and Prize Giving was held on the 12th November at Liberton Golf Club.
There was a great turnout as usual including all the juniors who attended the prizegiving.

Sheila our outgoing Captain ably conducted the meeting and her full report will be published on the website included in the minutes of the meeting. The juniors have grown from strength to strength and there were lots of real achievments by them throughout the season.

She thanked those who had helped her during the year then gave a synopsis of the highlights of her year, Notably amongst these were Hannah Scott winning the Championship for a second year, Alison McBride winning the Champion of Champion, Kate McIntosh gained her first cap for Scotland, Karen Marshall captained the Scottish Team again at the home internationals and  Karen Ballantyne won the East Vets Championship.

A real amazing highlight was for the first time since 1936  a Midlothian County player Gabrielle Macdonald won the Scottish Amateur Championship in its 100th year. She brought along the beautiful and very heavy cup for us all to see. Sheila also recommended that she be given honorary membership of MCLGA. This was hugely supported by all those present.

She also recommended that Janet Wake be given an honorary membership of MCLGA for all the contributions she has made to Scottish golf in her career. This again was very much welcomed.

Two proposals were on the agenda to be discussed.
The first was to consider changing the venue for the Champion of Champions from the Burgess to a club where equality existed. Both Gillian Kirkwood and Louise Fraser spoke very informatively about the history of why it is held each year at the Burgess. It has been held there for the last 40 years and they give us courtesy of the course and  are treated very well by the members. It is a championship course that creates a challenge to players of the top ability.
The proposal was hugely rejected but it was good to have this topic aired at an AGM and the members made aware of the reasons for continuing at the Burgess.

The second proposal was around the selector issue as in 5.9 of the constitution.
It was recommended that the wording  'being a full member' be added after County Champion in this paragraph. This means that should a junior or student member winning the Championship they wouldn't automatically become a selector for the County team.
This proposal won by a small majority.

Sheila passed over the Captain's badge to Zandra Mathieson who is our new Captain for the next two years. Zandra then introduced her Vice Captain Jacky Burnett. Jacky has worked for many years at a the highest levels for hockey in Scotland making her a great asset to Midlothian County .There were no other changes this year in the committee.

Zandra thanked Wendy Nicholson for all the hard work she had done as a selector for the last two years and introduce Ruth Brown as the new selector for this year.

The prize giving followed the meeting with the junior winners followed by the rest. Many congratulations to all the winners this year.

Junior Girls shine at Kingsfield

The Stephen Gallacher Foundation Finals day was held at Kingsfield on Saturday September 13th.

146 girls and boys competed and Midlothian girls figured prominently amongst the prizewinners of both the stroke and flag competitions.
Congratulations to all the prizewinners.
Stephen Gallacher was there in person on all day and presented the prizes making the day an extra special occasion.

Well done to Megan Linton who won the Under 16 Girls stroke play with a 41. She leads the 2014 Order of Merit for Under 16 girls.

Well done also to Claire Forrester who was first in the Under 16 Stroke play  of the  "Short Course" World Match Play Section and to Abby Steedman who won the Under 10 Girls Flag Event.

Special congratulations to Abby who became the "Short Course" World Match Play Champion of Champions - an honour open to both girls and boys. Abby was undoubtedly spurred on to success by overhearing one of the boys saying to his playing partner, "Come on, we cannot be beaten by a GIRL"
Well done Abby.

County Girls Championship at Ravelston Golf Club

The 2014 Junior Championship was held at Ravelston Golf Club on Sunday September 14th on an over cast but dry autumnal day. Ravelston was a new venue for our Championship and for most of our girls, a new experience.

The girls enjoyed the course which is not as easy as it may appear on first impressions. It's narrow fairways and tight greens necessitate an accurate game, the clinging rough seriously punishing those who stray from the straight and narrow. Despite this the girls played well and scores were good, bringing the CSS for the day down to 68 (SSS 69)

Katie Darling had an excellent round of  83 and becomes our new Midlothian Junior Champion. Well done to Katie who has had an excellent season and well deserves to be our Champion.

Congratulations also to Ailsa Lamond who won 1st handicap. She showed great tenacity by recovering from a nightmare 1st hole where she hooked her drive into the rough. From thence she managed to hack it out only to be caught by the branch of a tree which landed her under a bush. After an amazing shot from what for anyone else would have been an unplayable lie, she finally walked off  with a 7. Undaunted she recovered to finish with a nett 67. A true Champion in the making!

Grateful thanks to Ravelston Golf Club for allowing us the courtesy of the course and for their warm reception and hospitality - their legendary cakes are as delicious as ever.

Full results:

1st scratch and Champion   Katie Darling 83
2nd scratch                         Megan Linton 87

1st Handicap                     Ailsa Lamond   93 - 26 = 67
2nd Handicap                    Caitlin Turner   98 - 29 = 69

CSS for day 68

Well done girls and thanks to all for competing. Thanks also to Sharon, Zandra, Tracy and Hilary and to all those who helped on the day.
