Team for County Finals 2011

The selection committee is pleased to announce the team for the Scottish County Finals which are being held at Dumfries and County from 16-18 September. Midlothian will play Ayrshire on the Friday, Perth & Kinross on the Saturday and Dumfriesshire on the Sunday.

Unfortunately, we are losing three of our team who got us to the finals. Rachael Watton has left for the USA on a four year golf scholarship, Louise Fraser is heading down under for a long planned for trip and Claire Hargan, in her role as SLGA Championship Manager is responsible for running the finals. However we do have great replacements. Kirsten Blackwood (Glencorse) returns to the team and both Linda Bain (Lochend) and Sal Shepherd (Craigmillar Park) come into the team for the first time. The team are looking forward to the Finals and following two challenging warm up games against Broomieknowe and Duddingston men, are getting themselves ready for the challenge ahead. The full team is:

Linda Bain (Lochend)

Kirsten Blackwood (Glencorse)

Gabrielle Macdonald (Craigielaw)

Karen Marshall (Baberton)

Kate McIntosh (Broomieknowe)

Wendy Nicholson (Broomieknowe)

Sal Shepherd (Craigmillar Park)

Jane Turner (Craigielaw)

Reserve: Hannah Scott (Broomieknowe)

If you have some free time between 16-18 September, why not plan a wee trip to Dumfries - I know its a bit of a drive - but its a nice drive, and we would really welcome your support.

Our monthly junior 9 hole competition took place on Sunday on Swanston's Templar course with 11 girls playing, and although there was a little rain at the start it was a dry but slightly windy day. Lisa MacPherson just missed her birdie at the 8th, Emily Rigg had a very good up and down from the side of the 9th, Caitlin Turner had a good two putt 3 on the 7th and Lucy Morrison was best of all with two 3's on her card - not bad for an 8 year old! Although not in the prizes Ella Marshall had a 49 and this is the first time she has beaten 50. Well done all of you girls!

Summer Meeting

The Summer Meeting eventually took place at Craigmillar Park yesterday and we had an altogether different day weather wise than we had on the monsoon hit original date. 57 ladies took part. Wendy took the honours with the better inward half, There were only two 2's recorded by Karen Ballantyne and Morag Wardrop (Turnhouse).

MCLGA Biennial Tri Am 2011

Well what a pleasant surprise - the Tri Am was played at Newbattle yesterday, the sun shone for most of the day, and nobody got wet!! What a fantastic day we had - great golf and great fun. Everyone seemed to enjoy the new format and were mighty relieved to find out that there was only one ball counting on the last 6 holes. One group, who shall be nameless, decided to give themselves a challenge and counted all 3! How keen were they - especially as it included the challenging 17th hole!

The last few groups did finish in the dark, with captain ready to go out with the search lights. However the pleas of disadvantage from the last group of County team players fell on deaf ears, as they had scooped up two nearest the pin prizes and the Captain's team had earlier been demoted to second place. We will never know if they had the longest drive on the 18th because they couldn't see, but since Louise Fraser's drive earlier in the day, was out of sight anyway, I doubt it!

The results were as follows:

1st Sandra Dickson, Mandy Charters, Jacquelyn Dick (Mortonhall) 81

2nd Mary Richardson, Sal Shepherd, Ruth Wilkojc (Craigmillar Park) 83

3rd Maureen Stewart, Jane Browitt (Glencorse) Karen Elliot (Newbattle)85 bih

4th Michele Lowe, Alison Davies (Deer Park), Irene Adams (Liberton) 85 bih

Sponsored prizes

Nearest the pin at 3 - Kirsten Blackwood (Glencorse)

Longest drive (Bronze) at 6 - Stella Thomson (Swanston New)

Nearest the pin at 8 - Pat Staples (Liberton)

Nearest the pin at 11 - Kirsten Blackwood (Glencorse)

Nearest the pin in 2 at 12 - Amanda Liddle (Ratho Park)

Nearest the pin in 2 at 14 - Zandra Mathieson (Broomieknowe)

Longest drive (Silver) at 18 - Louise Fraser (Kingsknowe)

The main raffle prize was one by Dorothy Wilson (Harburn) - enjoy your day out Dorothy. I'm sure you will have many friends being nice to you just now! Many thanks to Ian Young at the Braid Hills Golf centre for the kind donation and to the Ladies Golf Centre and our President for the runners up prizes. Thanks also to all who contributed to the raffle - we raised a fantastic £550 to support our volunteer caddie's expenses for the forthcoming Scottish County Finals in Dumfries.

Thanks to Newbattle Golf club and to all who helped on the day, especially Barbara Hamilton of Newbattle who made lovely egg sandwiches for the officials (in yummy home made bread!), was out early in her buggy putting out the hole prize markers and making numerous trips the bank to get lots of £5 notes for the raffle, amongst other things.
