Junior Singles Competition

Congratulations to Julia Smith on beating Carys Irving to win the 2016 Junior Singles title.

Thank you to Sarah Ledingham and Sharon MacPherson for encouraging and cajouling 16 young Midlothian girls to compete in this year's competition.  Well done all!

East of Scotland Championship

The 2016 East of Scotland was played at Elie and Earlsferry golf course on Sunday 9th October where  the Midlothian Team finished in third place.

Midllothian were represented by Kate McIntosh, Hannah Scott (both Broomieknowe) and Karen Ferguson-Snedden (Liberton). Particular congratulations to Kate who finished runner up to Elaine Moffat (Fife), scoring a 2-under par 71 on a perfect day.   Karen did well, finishing in third place.   Unfortunately Hannah Scott, who was defending the title, was struggling with a rotator cuff injury that must have caused her a lot of pain and frustration.

A great team effort - well done.   Thanks to Alison Scott for providing the results - they were well hidden on the Scottish Golf website!

Gibson Cup 2016

Report from Sal Shepherd ...

The 90 entrants for the 2016 Gibson Challenge Cup matched the weekend weather with some great golf. This historic women’s foursomes competition played over The Braid Hills course since 1907 had the worthiest of winners.

Victors with the Gibson Cup Jenni Ray & Marie Young flanked by June Peebles,  Edinburgh Leisure Chief Exec and Braids Golf Centre's Ian Young, clearly a great coach, that’s his wife next to him with the Trophy!

Marie young and Jenni Ray of North Berwick played the best golf from the Strokeplay Qualifier on Saturday topping the leaderboard with a nett 69.5, two shots ahead of Mortonhall’s Anne Brownie and Mary Stark all the way to winning the final on Sunday afternoon 5&4 against Anne and Mary.

In the mornings semis, Marie and Jenni knockout the Peebles pairing of Glynis Read and Denise Richards 2up and Anne & Mary beat Broomieknowe’s Gillian Carter and Moyra Statham 64.

The 2nd Fight played to win the Claret Jug was won by another Mortonhall team of Viv Curran & Carol Fulton. They beat last years Gibson Cup winners Sue Cowie and Pam Townsend in the mornings semi and Craigmillar Park’s Janet Hamblin and Ruth Wilkojc 4&3 in the final. Janet and Ruth had beaten Harburn’s Linda Boyle and Dorothy Wilson in the morning other semi.

Viv, June and Carol

For all those who had not qualified for the 2 fights of match-play there was a Consolation Stableford on Sunday. Won by Fiona Findlay and Kelly McShannon of Lochend with 36 points. Second place was taken by Norma Richmond and Rosie Dennis of Murrayfield with 33 points and in 3rd  place with 32 was Catherine Stewart and Janet Begrie.

Fiona and Kelly with Ian and June

Many thanks go to Ian Young of the Braids Golf Centre and Steve at American Golf for continuing to sponsor the Gibson Cup. We were delighted to welcome to our prize giving the Chief Executive of Edinburgh Leisure June Peebles. June is keen to support the development of girls and womens golf in Edinburgh so I hope we made a positive impression with our numbers, golf and our enthusiasm for this event.

All of us at the Gibson Cup weekend are most grateful to Edinburgh Leisure for their support year on year by hosting this great event over The Braid Hills course. It really is a gem of a course and was in excellent condition as always.

We ran a charity raffle over the weekend in aid of MND Scotland in memory of a good friend of many of us and a former competitor. Thanks to such generosity by all I will be sending £410 to MND Scotland.

2017 event will take place on 7th and 8th October see you all then.

Conclusion of our Summer Hole and Hole....

Karen Ballentyne from Craigmillar Park is our new Silver hole and hole champion.  Karen played against Viv Mitchell from Lochend in a closely contested match.  Karen was down in her match at the turn but turned things around in the back holes to win her match on 15th.  Congratulations to Karen but also to Viv for managing to get into the final, a great achievement.

Clem Douglas from Turnhouse is our new Bronze hole and hole champion.  Clem played in an "all Turnhouse final" against our own Shelagh McComiskey who records our scores for these competitions.  Again the match was closely contended, with Clem just pipping Shelagh to win on 18th.  Again well done Clem on her victory but also to Shelagh for finishing runner up.   A picture below of Clem and Shelagh prior to teeing off below.

Results of Stephen Gallagher Race to Dunbar

What a brilliant round by our Emma Morrison (Craigmillar Park) who won the overall sratch prize with a 68. They are checking but think this may be a Ladies course record.
Well done Emma

Well done to Megan Linton and Eilidh Crawford who were first and second in the under 18 scratch order of merit .
